- The Isle of Wight school system will be spending nearly half a million dollars for three years on iPads to replace old textbooks. October 2012
- Smithfield High School senior Abigail Ketcham wins a National BetaClub award. Ketcham place 5th in the category of Acrylic Painting at the 2012 National Beta Convention after placing 1st at the Virginia Beta Convention. September 2012
- Preliminary reports show Isle of Wight County Schools maintain their history of a high level of SOL pass rates for 2011-2012 academic year . Scores included 94.6 percent for Science, 91 percent for English, and 87.5 percent for History — all above state averages. August 2012
- Smithfield High School band director, Mr. Aaron Hill, has been named Isle of Wight County’s 2012 Teacher of the Year. May 2012
- Smithfield Middle School student, Kirk Lindsay wins National competition. Kirk Lindsay, was named a winner of the Youth Prize in the National STEM Video Game Challenge, a competition to motivate interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. May 2012
- Laura Abel, former principal of Grafton Middle School, has been named the new Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, and Administration for Isle of Wight County Schools. May 2012
- Windsor High School senior Maurica Bynum has been selected as a Gates Millennium Scholar for 2012. This is the second consecutive year a Windsor High School student has earned the prestigious honor. April 2012
- Carrollton Elementary is awarded the 2012 Excellence Award by the Virginia Board of Education! The school has exceeded all state and federal benchmarks for at least two consecutive years. February 2012
